Testo: The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation, a Sarawak statutory body entrusted with the regulatory function for the state’s timber industry, is also known as the lead agency under the Ministry Of Urban Development and Natural Resources Sarawak (Malaysia), to develop Bamboo Based Industry in Sarawak under 3 main focus 1) to embark on Bamboo Plantation 2) to carry out more R&D on Bamboo plantation and applied research on application of bamboo for high value-added product 3) to attract potential investors and technology provider to develop the downstream processing. To ensure the sustainability of bamboo supply to support their proposed industry, the agency has embarked on Bamboo Pilot Plantation. Currently they have planted 13 species of bamboo. The main objective to establish this pilot project is to provide a sustainable source of seedling material for their tissue culture project. In the long term plan, they target to establish not less than 10,000 ha of bamboo plantation by 2030. Currently the agency has developed a Bamboo Master Plan as a guideline and way forward to develop the bamboo based industry. They have identified at least 5 potential products and industries. The products are, bamboo charcoal and activated carbon for air and water filter, engineered bamboo - flooring, panels, glubamboo for structure, furniture & etc, bamboo for food production e.g. bamboo shoots, bamboo flour, pickles etc., bamboo for pharmaceutical and cosmetic, Bamboo biomass and composite product e.g. bamboo OSB, bamboo pellet, and bamboo fiberboard and bamboo for fiber and green and sustainable textile, as the end products. These industries will be developed through private sector initiative and investment collaboration between the private sector and the local agency's subsidiary company. The state policy also allows 100% foriegn equity to venture in manufacturing activities in Sarawak.Based on the above plan, the agency is inviting interested investors and technology providers to explore the opportunities and potential of their Bamboo Based Industry Plan.
